    Exact ground states of a staggered supersymmetric model for lattice fermions

    We study a supersymmetric model for strongly interacting lattice fermions in the presence of a staggering parameter. The staggering is introduced as a tunable parameter in the manifestly supersymmetric Hamiltonian. We obtain analytic expressions for the ground states in the limit of small and large staggering for the model on the class of doubly decorated lattices. On this type of lattice there are two ground states, each with a different density. In one limit we find these ground states to be a simple Wigner crystal and a valence bond solid (VBS) state. In the other limit we find two types of quantum liquids. As a special case, we investigate the quantum liquid state on the one dimensional chain in detail.     Solid State NMR Characterization and Adsorption Properties of Lignocellulose-Clinoptilolite Composites Prepared with Siloxanes Coupling Agents

    This study reports the preparation of lignocellulose-clinoptilolite composites by means of N-terminated siloxanes as coupling agents, after acid hydrolysis. Reactions were carried out in the presence of dibutyltin dilaurate as catalyst by reacting lignocellulose modified with the coupling agents and clinoptilolite at 140 °C inDMFunder nitrogen atmosphere. The light in weight and fluffy composites obtained were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, TGA, SEM and Solid State NMR. Results depicted possible chemical interactions between the two materials (lignocellulose and clinoptilolite). Used as adsorbents, the composites showed to be good candidates for the removal of used motor oil fromaqueous solution, withupto 92mg g–1 of chemical oxygen demand removed.KEYWORDS Lignocellulose, clinoptilolite, chemical modification, composites, solid state NMR, used motor oil

    Detailed analysis of the continuum limit of a supersymmetric lattice model in 1D

    We present a full identification of lattice model properties with their field theoretical counter parts in the continuum limit for a supersymmetric model for itinerant spinless fermions on a one dimensional chain. The continuum limit of this model is described by an N=(2,2)\mathcal{N}=(2,2) superconformal field theory (SCFT) with central charge c=1. We identify states and operators in the lattice model with fields in the SCFT and we relate boundary conditions on the lattice to sectors in the field theory. We use the dictionary we develop in this paper, to give a pedagogical explanation of a powerful tool to study supersymmetric models based on spectral flow. Finally, we employ the developed machinery to explain numerically observed properties of the particle density on the open chain presented in Beccaria et al.     Bovine Ocular Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) is a general designation for a group of primary neoplasias of keratinocytes arising from ocular tissues, especially the lids and particularly the third eye lid. OSCC has been diagnosed all over the world with high prevalence, being the most common bovine tumour and the one causing the most significant economic losses (Hamir & Parry, 1980; Dennis et al., 1985, Heeney & Valli, 1985; Wilcock, 1993). In Portugal, the frequency of these tumours is particularly high in the Azores, where in S. Miguel Island a large number of cattle affected with OSCC is rejected for consumption at slaughter. OSCC is the second most frequent neoplasia after urinary bladder tumours, representing 21% of all cases of rejection due to neoplasia (Pinto et al, 1996). Several reasons have been advanced to explain this situation namely the fact that animals stay in pasture all year around, with a prolonged exposition to day light and benefiting from few shelters. The ingestion of toxic plants present the pasture could also give rise to photosensitazation problems, either primary or due to hepatic toxicity, that could generate predisposing conditions to the development of OSCC

    Photoassociation of cold atoms with chirped laser pulses: time-dependent calculations and analysis of the adiabatic transfer within a two-state model

    This theoretical paper presents numerical calculations for photoassociation of ultracold cesium atoms with a chirped laser pulse and detailed analysis of the results. In contrast with earlier work, the initial state is represented by a stationary continuum wavefunction. In the chosen example, it is shown that an important population transfer is achieved to 15\approx 15 vibrational levels in the vicinity of the v=98 bound level in the external well of the 0g(6s+6p3/2)0_g^-(6s+6p_{3/2}) potential. Such levels lie in the energy range swept by the instantaneous frequency of the pulse, thus defining a ``photoassociation window''. Levels outside this window may be significantly excited during the pulse, but no population remains there after the pulse. Finally, the population transfer to the last vibrational levels of the ground a3Σu+a^3\Sigma_u^+(6s + 6s) is significant, making stable molecules. The results are interpreted in the framework of a two state model as an adiabatic inversion mechanism, efficient only within the photoassociation window. The large value found for the photoassociation rate suggests promising applications. The present chirp has been designed in view of creating a vibrational wavepacket in the excited state which is focussing at the barrier of the double well potential.Comment: 49 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Phys.     Syrbactin-class dual constitutive- and immuno-proteasome inhibitor TIR-199 impedes myeloma-mediated bone degeneration in vivo

    Proteasome-addicted neoplastic malignancies present a considerable refractory and relapsed phenotype with patients exhibiting drug resistance and high mortality rates. To counter this global problem, novel proteasome-based therapies are being developed. In the current study, we extensively characterize TIR-199, a syrbactin-class proteasome inhibitor derived from a plant virulence factor of bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv syringae. We report that TIR-199 is a potent constitutive and immunoproteasome inhibitor, capable of inducing cell death in multiple myeloma, triple-negative breast cancer, (TNBC) and non-small cell lung cancer lines. TIR-199 also effectively inhibits the proteasome in primary myeloma cells of patients, and bypasses the PSMB5 A49T+A50V bortezomib-resistant mutant. TIR-199 treatment leads to accumulation of canonical proteasome substrates in cells, it is specific, and does not inhibit 50 other enzymes tested in vitro. The drug exhibits synergistic cytotoxicity in combination with proteasome-activating kinase DYRK2 inhibitor LDN192960. Furthermore, low-doses of TIR-199 exhibits in vivo activity by delaying myeloma-mediated bone degeneration in a mouse xenograft model. Together, our data indicates that proteasome inhibitor TIR-199 could indeed be a promising next-generation drug within the repertoire of proteasome-based therapeutics
